A MONARCH’S JOURNEY
Presented by NOoSPHERE Arts and Newton Creek Alliance in collaboration with CreateART
As part of citywide Insectageddon events sponsored by The High Line, NYC
Featured in CEC ArtsLink’s Art Prospect Festival 2021: Forms of Unity
September 25th, 2021
An immersive dance & music performance among the wildflowers of industrial Greenpoint inspired by the migration of monarchs from their overwintering home in Mexico up to Canada and back again each year. In reflection of the butterflies’ itinerary, we commissioned site-specific works created and performed by choreographers/dancers from these two endpoints.
These pieces, curated by CreateART, bring attention to the ancient evolution and epic migration of the imperiled monarch butterfly while highlighting the opportunities in urban areas to support these creatures through the restoration of critical habitat - even in highly industrial environments.
Choreographed and performed by Erick Montes (Mexico) | Rebecca Margolick (Canada) + Dasol Kim
Specially composed music: Katy Gunn
Narration by Lisa Bloodgood read by Georgia Usborne

QUIS EST
BY ANNIE RIGNEY, PRESENTED BY CREATEART & ACE HOTEL NEW YORK
Live installation performance Quis Est presented by CreateART in September and October 2020 at Ace Hotel New York’s Breslin Restaurant outdoor dining patio. Directed and choreographed by Annie Rigney, combining dance, opera, and music. Quis est is a surrealistic portrait of a woman exploring the border between the beautiful and the grotesque, the refined and the absurd, the real and the imagined. The performance questions what support us, what uplifts us, and what holds us back. Featuring dancerMadison Doyle & Raechelle Manalo, singer Cassandra Douglas, and pianist Kyle Walker.
I N T E R V A L III
BY TESTU COLLECTIVE, PRESENTED BY CREATEART & ACE HOTEL NEW YORK
I N T E R V A L III, an intermedia performance by Testu Collective, explores environments with new perspectives during these uncertain times. Presented Ace Hotel New York, curated by CreateART.
I N T E R V A L III transformed the architecture of the Ace Hotel/Breslin though live projections created in real time by Dan Tesene through macro video of dynamic fluids moved into unique patterns with magnets. The audience see the “behind-the-scenes” displayed to the forefront in the window, along with Serene Stucke’s live creation of a haunting soundtrack with synthesizers and field recordings. Soft sculptures by Akiha Yamakami morph the shapes of the building, brought to life by the alien movement of Yoko Murakami.
I N T E R V A L III aims to challenge traditional perceptions of dance performance and audience experience.

WE ARE NATURE 2020
Taking place on the green roofs of Greenpoint, inspiring environmental engagement through awareness of humans’ place in the greater All.
“We often forget that we are nature. Nature is not something separate from us. So, when we say that we have lost our connection to nature, we’ve lost our connection to ourselves.” — Andy Goldsworthy
In September 2020, amidst a global pandemic, CreateART partnered with our friends at NOoSPHERE Arts to produce two very special rooftop events - AIR and WATER. The events were scheduled as bookends to Climate Week 2020. Each featured a theme introduction by renowned scientist, author, educator and activist Fritjof Capra; newly commissioned site-specific dance work by Kelly Ashton Todd and Kizuna Dance, performed across several outdoor stages; and other guest artist performances. The events took place live with a limited audience in attendance following Covid guidelines, and were streamed online.
A co-production by NOoSPHERE Arts & CreateART sponsored, in part, by the Greater New York Arts Development Fund of the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, administered by Brooklyn Arts Council (BAC).
